The Grande River Basin has an area of 82,655.56 km2 and is inserted in the Cerrado biome, recognized as the "cradle of the waters" of Brazil and as the richest savanna in the world. As part of the São Francisco River Basin, the Grande River represents 12.6% of the drainage area of this federal river, being its largest sub-basin and the second most important in the contribution of its flow.

Its area also overlaps with the region known as MATOPIBA, the acronym of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, where the agricultural frontier of Brazil has expanded rapidly, with significant changes in the pattern of land use. Worsening conditions of the Grande River Basin have raised concerns about the proper use of natural resources, especially water, essential both for economic activities and for the survival of ecosystems and human communities.
