The Manhuaçu River Basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil, one of the main tributary basins of the Doce River, covers an area of 9,189 km². It is home to one of the largest populations of the northern Muriqui species (Brachyteles hypoxanthus), considered a symbol of the Atlantic Forest. For nearly forty years, CI-Brazil has supported the Muriqui da Caratinga project, which aims to conduct scientific research, monitor and implement actions for the conservation of this primate. The project in the Manhuaçu Basin aimed to evaluate key indicators to support the monitoring of freshwater co-benefits of the restoration actions of Permanent Preservation Areas and implementation of the Northern Muriqui Ecological Corridor.
