Fundamentals of Freshwater Health provides more general knowledge on the basics of freshwater ecosystems, their ecosystem services, and indicators to assess their health and governance.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Categorize the freshwater ecosystems in a basin.

  • Describe the societal use of water in terms of freshwater ecosystem services.

  • Analyze the pressures and threats shaping freshwater ecosystems in terms of its biodiversity and supply of services.

  • Assess the role of ecosystems in maintaining supply of services.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of systems managing the social and ecological aspects of freshwater in a basin.

Advanced Topics in Freshwater Health delves more deeply into the Freshwater Health Index indicator methodology and calculations and offers more in-depth training on how ultimately conduct a basin health assessment.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Develop a framework of analysis for freshwater health based on social-ecological principles.

  • Determine the key conditions that influence the vitality of freshwater ecosystems.

  • Assess the role of water governance in shaping freshwater health.

  • Measure the state of and changes to freshwater ecosystems, services they provide and their governance, using indicators of the FHI.
